The stories are simple enough for a child to read and have enough symbolism for an adult to enjoy. We've had great talks about the books we've finished and race to get to those we've yet to read. Your kids are much smarter than we think. My daughter has picked up on most of the symbolism and has great insights on the characters. Don't expect the books to have great layers as the movies do. I chose to pull books by Tamora Pierce from my 13 year old daughter after glancing into them to find uncontrolable passions of the teen aged heroine, plus mentioning the use of magic for birth control. Uncontrolable passion is never a good thing if we are truthful. Even my distain of rap!
