Summary: Maybe I'm just hooked on the series...
Comment: Although I think some of the critism in the reviews has some valid points (too many typos), I was actually kind of pleased that the story was more concise, and didn't try to do too much (with the plot, would you really want it to be the 8 point font the other books were, and 500+ pages)? Yes, it is dark. My critism is that what makes this series different from other comparable books is the relationship between the main characters. Based on the story, they are only together for a relatively small part of the book. Thus, it didn't have some of the appeal for me that the other books did.

All that said, I think that it may move the characters further along in their own growth and maturity than some of the other books in the series. Pulling the characters apart, as the author she has done, she can really discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each, and how various plot points effect them. I may have enjoyed this more than the prior book, since political intrique is a relatively minor side issue here, as opposed to the last one. Good read, and a must read for anyone who is also interested in Alec and Seregil.

But start with the first one (Luck in the Shadows), not this one.

Summary: good stuff
Comment: I just love this series. I love these characters. As Kathy Griffith says Lynn "Delivers like Dominoes". I can't wait for more.

Summary: Sadistic, but not too much...
Comment: A little sadistic and a little too open for another novel. I loved the first book. You can almost feel the energy between Seregil and Alec. The second was good, too. This one was a little too mushy.

Summary: A fun, quick read
Comment: Like the earlier Nightrunner books, "Shadows Return" is an easy, enjoyable read. The plot does get a bit bogged down with misunderstandings and personal intrigues, at the expense of the action and adventure that infused the other books.

There are some very dark themes running throughout "Shadows Return," but Flewelling seems reluctant to deal with them face on. Preferring instead to rely on insinuation and hints from the characters; this leaves the reader disassociated from the story. Big issues are fretted over, then simple accepted. I would have liked to have been aware of more of the thought process behind the decisions of these characters.

That said, I did enjoy returning to Seregil and Alec's world and look forward to the conclusion of this latest stage of their lives in the next book.

Summary: Nice surprise
Comment: I had this book handed to me and when I started reading I realized it was part IV of a series, but that didn't stop me. I really enjoyed it a lot. I'd never heard of the series before and later found out a few friends had read it. I've already gone and bought the first two in the series and will no doubt read the third. If this isn't the best one then I am really looking forward to the others!

Editorial Reviews:

With their most treacherous mission yet behind them, heroes Seregil and Alec resume their double life as dissolute nobles and master spies. But in a world of rivals and charmers, fate has a different plan.…

After their victory in Aurënen, Alec and Seregil have returned home to Rhíminee. But with most of their allies dead or exiled, it is difficult for them to settle in. Hoping for diversion, they accept an assignment that will take them back to Seregil’s homeland. En route, however, they are ambushed and separated, and both are sold into slavery. Clinging to life, Seregil is sustained only by the hope that Alec is alive.

But it is not Alec’s life his strange master wants—it is his blood. For his unique lineage is capable of producing a rare treasure, but only through a harrowing process that will test him body and soul and unwittingly entangle him and Seregil in the realm of alchemists and madmen—and an enigmatic creature that may hold their very destiny in its inhuman hands…. But will it prove to be savior or monster?
