Summary: The Frighteners
Comment: This is like a cross between "Ghost" and "Ghostbusters". Some sligthly scary and mostly amusing parts as Michael J. Fox (Spin City, Back to the Future, Family Ties, etc.) tries to earn a living pretending to eliminate spirits from homes. He has the advantage of three spirits working for him. Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings, King Kong, Bad Taste, etc.) was instrumental in directing, co-writing, and co-producing this movie. The movie is a rollercoaster moving almost non-stop as Fox realizes he is somehow linked to several new murders in town. The problem is a bazaar FBI agent well played by Jeffrey Combs (Re-Animator, DS-9, Enterprise, etc.) believes he is guilty. Meanwhile the town is going crazy with hauntings as well. Good quality DVD with decent replayability. If you enjoyed this catch "An American Werewolf in London" and "Nightbreed". - C. Luster

Summary: excellent
Comment: Now this was a really funny movie! Not to mention features some incredibly good and ahead of their time special effects. The ghosts are all very unusually and frighteningly charming, and the way they move around almost looks life-like at times.

The story is exciting and family friendly, and intended as a family comedy I believe (so the kids can watch it). It probably has the same kind of zany storyline direction that the Back to the Future series did, but not quite as good as those movies (they were, and always will be, classics).

Just a total coincidence- I just checked out a Michael J. Fox website and found out I'm actually typing this review on the same day as his birthday. He's 47 today!

Anyway, I highly recommend this very entertaining movie.

Summary: Fun, slightly creepy, and imaginative good time
Comment: I had never seen this movie until this past October, and that was only a portion. Still, I must say I was intrigued enough to order the DVD. And then I thought, hey, I'll go for the director's cut. So I really have nothing to compare that to, but let's just that I truly enjoyed it.

I understand that the movie is something of a cult classic and it is easy to see why. I hate to call it pure horror as it is much funnier and sweeter than that, but it does have the stuff of such. In truth, it is a movie about ghosts rather than a scary movie and the tortured man who works a con operation with them.

I'm a huge fan of Michael J. Fox and I think he does pretty good in this. His character is a little more sensitive than what I have seen him and he pulls it off, but he most comes to life as the stalwart and brave soul we all know he is.

The tale itself is really quite imaginative, especially those fascinated by the fun ghosts can offer. In fact, most of the ghosts we meet are nice and funny rather than scary. And hey, someone was actually to make ghosts work with objects in a logical way!

This is a great Halloween movie and if this had extra scenes I liked them. The extras are also plenty of fun, featuring the making of, interviews, and even a bit on real ghostly experiences.

Summary: Entertaining, but not really a horroe film
Comment: I caught this movie on TV, and it was entertaining enough for me to sit through the whole film. I would have liked to give it a 3.6 stars if I could. I think it has a spark of something which makes it a little better than average, but I hesitate to call it excellent (4 stars). Since I knew nothing about this film, I was quite amazed to find people categorize it as a horror-comedy when I later looked it up here on Amazon.

I am an easily terrified person, so I generally stayed away from horror or gory movies. I remember when I finally gathered enough courage to watch "The Shining" because it is said to be such a classic, I had to turn my head away every time I sensed something potentially scary coming up. In the end, my total viewing time of that movie was less than 5 minutes. I suppose this explains how much I can stomach a horror movie. When I watched this movie, the word "scary" never came into my mind. I though it was fun, the special effect nice, and it was nice to see Michael J Fox again after a long while (although I wished his character weren't so headstrong, as usual). The plot could have been a little more unpredictable. But it was fun, entertaining, but no horror movie.

Editorial Reviews:

One movie lover's nightmare is another's raucous joyride, and this special effects-laden horror comedy is bound to split both camps right down the middle. (Or, as Leonard Maltin's Movie & Video Guide puts it, "definitely not for all tastes but a wild time for those who get into it.") Michael J. Fox plays a psychic investigator who can actually see ghosts, and lives with a trio of undead spirits who scare people to promote Fox's ghost-busting business. In a town infamous for serial killings, a new series of deaths prompts Fox to induce his own out-of-body experience so he can battle death in a spirit-plagued netherworld where evil reigns supreme--or something like that. So much happens in this chaotic film that you might feel like you're watching several movies at once--a slasher pic, a supernatural thriller, and a black comedy all rolled into a nonstop showcase for grisly makeup and a dozen varieties of special effects. It's an odd but wildly inventive film from New Zealand director Peter Jackson, who earned critical acclaim for his previous film Heavenly Creatures and would later create the ingenious pseudo-documentary Forgotten Silver. --Jeff Shannon
