Customer Rating: Summary: Maxxum Comment: This backpack is amazing! I can carry it everywhere I want. It's so comfortable, that I can even sleep with it. It has so many pockets that you can put your cell phone, bottle with water, laptop, mouse, foods and so much more. I think this is the perfect solution!
Customer Rating: Summary: Great but HUGE Comment: Buy this bag if you intend to carry your laptop and most everything else you'll need for a week's trip... in the mountains, along the trails, the beach, anywhere in open spaces. On crowded buses, trains, streets... it's too big. I bought this version of the bag to take to San Francisco for the summer but found that once I was there and didn't need to carry my entire life everywhere, I was a bull in a china shop.
If I had it to do over again, I'd go down one size, and still be able to carry my laptop whenever I wanted.
Customer Rating: Summary: Very good pack with a couple issues Comment: I've had the Maxxum backpack for about two years. It has served me well but over time I've discovered a couple things I thought could be better designed.
Pros:
- It fits my Dell Latitude 15.4 inch D620 perfectly. Even with the D620's protruding battery pack at the front, the notebook fits snugly into the Maxxum's padded pocket. There's a zippered pocket in the laptop compartment that I used to store the power cables and an international socket converter.
- I don't use it much, but the media pocket at the top could be very handle for portable media player users. There's a rubber valve that you can thread a headphone cable through. Some backpacks just have a hole, but the Maxxum's rubber aperture for the cable might create a more snug fit if you are in rainy environments.
- I like the open pocket on the front. When I have to carry this thing through an airport, It's nice to have that pocket for quick access to things like boarding passes and magazines.
- The handle on top of the pack is solid and I use it all the time. After two years it is showing only minor wear.
- The airflow padding on the pack is reasonably comfortable.
- The two side zippered pockets are nice for accessories.
- The two side external netted pockets are also good for quick access items.
- The organizer pocket is also handy with a key ring and several pockets. Although some of the other reviews indicate there aren't dedicated sleeves for pens, I have put multiple pens in one of the pockets and it works fine.
- The main compartment is large and I've stuffed everything into it from books to a jacket.
- There's another zippered pocket on the inside of the main storage area that I use often for things like CDs and additional accessories.
Cons:
- The laptop padded sleeve is not balanced with the rest of the pack. It causes the pack to lean toward the padded back area where the shoulder straps are. It may seem like a little thing, but one of the other reviewers alluded to this too; the backpack doesn't stand well on its own anymore. Mine now leans enough that it falls over. I can't leave it on a chair or edge of a table and feel safe unless I go ahead and place it on its side.
- The open pocket is something I've developed a love-hate relationship with. It's still great for items I need quick access to, but it tends to sag away from the rest of the pack if you have things in it. The Wenger designers must have realized this and so there are two straps and clips you can connect to keep the pocket tight with the rest of the pack. They do work but with them connected, it's a little trickier to quickly insert and withdraw magazine-sized documents in the pocket.
- The side netted pockets won't hold much if the zippered side pockets are full. But this concern would probably be true of any comparable feature on other backpacks. And I do use the netted pockets a lot for my cell phone.
- No cell phone pouch on sholder strap. Per the above comment, I've found a solution by using the side netted pocket. But some people may prefer the strap pouch. However, using the side pocket is better if, like me, you stow the backpack under the seat in front of you when traveling by air.
- I must agree with other reviewers' comments that the backpack is bulky. On some airplanes, it will still fit under the passenger seat. But one others I've had to fiddle with it a bit to get it to fit.
This is a good backpack. It has done everything I've asked of it, but I would like to find a pack that better addresses some of the cons. I find that other offerings from both Wenger and Targus seem a bit slimmer and manage the open space in their pockets better, but the Maxxum is one of the few backpacks that feature the open outside pocket. I'll keep looking for something better, but I'm in no rush.
Customer Rating: Summary: Favorite item Comment: It is a little bit larger than i cared for once I got it in the mail, but this is my new favorite item. I care a laptop too and from work everyday. I work at television studios in california so the walk from the parking structure to my office can be a very long walk. I used to have a briefcase looking laptop holder that always hurt my shoulders.
This is RED (my fave) and it is padded on the straps but also on the part of the bookbag that is against your back.
In fact, with the new strict laws for flying, I take out all my work stuff and pack this bad boy up for my trips on a plane. It holds and awful lot, but I don't feel like I am carrying too much at all. Very durable. I love it.
Customer Rating: Summary: Perfect Comment: I live on a college campus and have on average three different buildings to go to in a day. I specifically got this to cart around my MacBook Pro 15" and it works perfectly. It has enough room to hide a body in and very solidly built. As long as you're not throwing the thing against the wall, you're MBP will be safe and sound.
