Customer Rating: Summary: Tums Neutralizes Stomach Acid Comment: Tums is a good product for those who have occasional heartburn. Taking a Tums or a Rolaids may be effective in relieving the burning pain of heartburn. Both work fairly simply, they are calcium carbonate products that help neutralize stomach acids. They are handy in that they work instantly, with no lag time. Both happen to be a good source of calcium as well.
Like any medication, Tums has the potential to interact with other medications. The medications known to interact with antacids include:
1. Antibiotics, such as tetracyclines or quinolones (Levaquin, Cipro)
2. Antifungals, such as itraconazole (Sporanox)
3. Digoxin (Lanoxin), a medication used to treat congestive heart failure
4. Iron supplements
To reduce or prevent drug interactions with antacids, it is generally recommended that you take antacids at least one hour before or two hours after other medications. Tell your doctor if you take antacids on a regular basis, since they may interact with other medications you are taking.
For those with more severe or persistent heartburn symptoms, (that are not relieved with Tums or Rolaids) I would recommend considering a step up to Zantac or Tagamet, both being more effective stomach acid suppressors (note they are not neutralizers, but actually suppress stomach acid production).
Finally, for the really serious cases of persistent heartburn that do not get better with the previous treatments, I'd try Prilosec or Prevacid, which are the very best inhibitors of stomach acid production in an over-the-counter form.

Customer Rating: Summary: Tastey and effective Comment: Sweet taste of artificial orange, much like children's Bayer aspirin and yet sugar free.
