Customer Rating: Summary: Best thing you can get that isn't an SLR. Comment: I purchased this camera from Amazon around February and it is fantastic. Given about a 30 minute learning curve, it's a very easy camera to use. The only negative I could find would be the digital noise in some low-level light pictures. But this is what you will mostly find in any good zoom camera in these conditions. [...] That is one of the BEST review sites for Digital Cameras. I also have the Nikon E15ED telephoto lens for it. This requires step rings to install properly, but is a great addition (if you can find one). Check out my pictures I added to Amazon. I am not a great photographer, but this camera makes great shots a heck of a lot easier!
Customer Rating: Summary: In a Pinch, a Saviour! Comment: A staff photographer with 24 years on one newspaper should know something about cameras, and I swear by the Lumix FZ and TZ line cameras. I now own the FZ18, after having worked with the FZ20, FZ30, TZ1 and TZ3. The FZ20 had too poor a video image, and I ruined the FZ30 while covering a deluge one morning, and they wanted video. Since my large HVX200 (valued at $6,000) didn't have a protective cover, I had to sacrifice the FZ30, but the dead body will be added to my collection of my cameras (Minolta SRT101, Sears 500MX, and Nikon/Kodak NC2000e digital) I have had pride working with to develop my career.
This TZ18 has two negatives: one is the lack of zooming when shooting video. I rather would have a choice to zoom and then shoot than zooming after the recording starts, which makes my video more stable and professional. Yesterday, I recently came up with a way to capture footage and not concern myself over the audio, a big problem for me since the microphone is worse than most, and the cameras have never had mic inputs. But thinking whether I should delete a star, realize that this camera isn't designed to do everything superbly, but it does everything so well that the audio and zoom issues for my needs are easy work-arounds.
As for being a saviour? Covering Pope Benedict's arrival in Maryland, President GW Bush walked with the Pope inside the building beyond the press riser. Yanking my SD cards from my Nikon D2HS and D2XS cameras, I prepared to knock all the gear down to transmit all the images and work on video when the pair surprisingly returned. The window to shoot was very brief between the building and where the other risers blocked the view so I turned on the FZ18 and fired off several frames. Remember: working in a press pool, there are hundreds of eyes and hundreds of collective years of talent, all trying to get everything we can to tell a complete story. I want to get everything in my position so I don't feel like I've wasted my spot. Well, let's say that the FZ18 worked well, and I will provide the shot here, as well as one of the plane, since the Lumix was the only wide camera I had. That way you can see the range this baby works.
Just make sure to respect its limits. The FZ18 isn't a very good available light camera with moving objects. I like keeping it on ISO 100, its lowest setting. So, images taken in window light may require shutter speeds as low as 1/4 second or even lower!
Customer Rating: Summary: Great For The Price Comment: I was just about to get an Olympus Evolt 510 DSLR when I kept coming across such great reviews on this camera. I know nothing about digital cameras and decided against a DSLR and went with this camera in black. The camera is beyond easy to use, which was the real selling point. It takes really good pictures and I could not be happier with my purchase. Beware of cheaper prices, make sure you are not getting a "grey market camera". Deal with Amazon and you will not be disappointed.
Customer Rating: Summary: Excellent value for money Comment: I bought this camera to replace my Canon S2IS that suffered the ever-popular CCD failure. I would first address some of the common complaints that are frequently raised against this model:
- Noise: Yes the camera does suffer from noise on high ISOs but in my opinion it is not worse than the equivalent models from Sony and Canon. My results are quite similar to those obtained from S2IS
- Low light performance: I have read advice that this is not the camera to take to dinner parties - mainly due to lack of focusing ability in low light. My hit rate has been quite good - not far beneath the old S2.
To sum up, yes the camera suffers from some short comings, just like any other comparable model out in the market, specially in this price bracket. However, the extra wide angle zoom range and the ability to shoot raw, more than offsets the minor edge other models might have against it in noise/low light performance.
Customer Rating: Summary: GREAT CAMERA Comment: Great camera whether your a novice or an expert! Set it to Auto for novices and you get great pictures. If you have lots of experience or want to gain more experience, this camera has all the settings and functions to enhance your picture taking capabilities. The software that accompanies it provides easy editing and I especially like the feature of being able to print my pictures with or without the date or a title. The battery supplied provides plenty of shoot time, however purchasing an extra one provides the additional conveniance of never running out of battery power, plus being able to use the batteries until totally disvharged, which enhances battery life.

The DMC-FZ18 Lumix 8.1-Megapixel Digital Camera can take photos from vast landscapes to super telephoto shots thanks to its 18x optical 28mm Wide-Angle Leica Zoom Lens. For macro shots, the wide-angle setting lets you shoot all the way down to one centimeter from your subject, while the telephoto setting can be used up to one meter (3.28 feet). Combined with Mega O.I.S. Optical Image Stabilization, the DMC-FZ18 can detect even the tiniest camera movement and automatically adjust the lens to compensate for any handshake. Intelligent ISO suppresses motion blur as you shoot, to capture crisp, clear images, making it easier to shoot scenes with fast moving action. The Face Detection function can automatically detect up to 15 faces in a scene and re-adjust the settings if their positions change. The Intelligent Scene Selector will sense the ambient conditions and automatically select either the Scenery, Portrait, Macro, Night Portrait or Night Scenery mode accordingly, getting beautiful results every time you shoot, no matter what the scene or subject.
