Customer Rating: Summary: Great when it works .... but then it doesn't..... Comment: This is a slick little unit - easy to carry, clip to your camera bag or belt, and schlep it all over. Even performed well inside a plane when I was testing it. It does not have the option to change logging rates while on the go (would be nice to have walk/drive/fly options without having to go back to a computer.)
Liked it so much I sent one to my sister for Christmas to log her once-in-a-lifetime trip to India.
Then on a trip to Scotland, for no apparent reason, it just stopped acquiring satellites and I lost about 1/4 of that trip and all of my next trip.
Customer support at GiSTEQ told me to update the firmware. Once done, the power LED blinked away but could not acquire satellites. Changed batteries, re-updated firmware, reset the unit ... still, no acquisition.
Sister had the SAME problem with her unit failing while in India - can't return the unit until her big trip is over.
My unit is back at the manufacturer at the moment (probably a couple weeks to turnaround, who knows.)
Bottom line: a tool like this should not need much coddling. It should work well for years, the battery should be easy to replace (it isn't) and the user should not have to wonder whether the unit is working or not.
It should not require having a computer and internet access to update firmware in the middle of a trip.
For me the jury is out - if GiSTEQ can make both units 'right' in one fix then it will be worth keeping. If not, I'll be howling for a refund and go on to another more reliable unit.
Customer Rating: Summary: Hands down the best tracker out there. Comment: I carried this on my honeymoon in Europe and had it log every 15seconds.
PROS:
I have all my photos geotagged on google maps & picasa and it's FANTASTIC.
It fits in the tiny pocket inside the right pocket of your jeans!!!
CONS:
The battery holder plastic is a little weak - it has cracked but still works.
It takes quite a bit to lock into the satellites (especially in cities). You need to leave it still for a minute or so for it to lock in - otherwise it might not at all. I happen to know the engineers at SiRF, the company that makes the GPS chip, and they recommend that I look for a firmware upgrade from GisTeq since they have addressed this problem since my honeymoon (in July).
The syncing software assumes that you're in the same TIMEZONE as the date/time stamp that the photos were taken in. When I got back to the USA to sync France and Italy I had to change my laptop's time zone to those countries (they are the same) when I did the sync. *I'm not sure if this was caused by the camera (Panasonic DMC-FX35) because it has a HOME and TRAVEL time zone setting so that you can simply change the GMT offset based on where you are.
It really wasn't a big deal to change the laptop's time first before doing the sync.
OTHER:
It burned through the normal AA battery in about 8 hours - which I was fine with. I simply put another AA battery in my pocket and changed it out while walking around.
I would say if you are travelling GET IT, visualization software of geotagged photos is good these days but will be AMAZING in a few years. You'll kick yourself if you don't get the info when you can.
UPDATE: 1/1/2009
I just downloaded the new tools and updated from Firmware 2.3 to 2.4 Once I get some better use from it I'll report back if it's locking in faster/better.
I also just posted a picture of the crack from the battery clip.
Customer Rating: Summary: extremely buggy. poor tech support. Comment: hardware has some issues. will turn off inadvertently for no reason. must constantly check to see if it's on. sometimes time/location tracking is not accurate. software even buggier. will wipe out your log files. must constantly backup your log files. tech support is worthless. i would not recommend this purchase. i can't recommend anything else as i have not used it but they need to seriously rework this until the bugs are out of there. do not buy!!! you've been warned.
Customer Rating: Summary: GiSteq Phototrackr Comment: The device works fine. It is fairly accurate in the test track I ran. The downside is the software for the Mac is lacking. It will not do RAW files and is not overly intuitive. The only "manual" is an online link to their website that I had to ask for. The unit only came with PC software.
Customer Rating: Summary: know what to expect, then it will satisfy Comment: It looks like an outdoor piece with the yellow case and mini carabiner.
It's not. There are no seals so it's not waterproof. The case is thin and I wouldn't want to hit it against a rock by accident.
However, it works. I had no trouble with USING the software and have purchased the PRO version. I've had it for about 4 months now and use it when I know I won't be in just 1 place (otherwise what's the point, right?). I had an issue installing the software on a laptop and support was responsive and fairly quick -- a day or 2 turnaround.
It's a small company and not a giant like MS or IBM so don't expect 24 hour at your door service and that kind of polished software.
I am also using rechargeable batteries and batt-life has been fine.
I carry it on my camera bag and it's missed maybe a couple points but it will ask you if you want to use the nearest waypoint which will work in most cases.
I've heard issues about the S*ny version from my friend. The chipset in this unit is supposedly as good or better than sirfIII.
so if you don't mind treating it as gently as your camera and knowing the company is not huge and expect the resulting level for the software then it probably beats some other choices. Is it the best? no. Does it work for the price? SO far yes.
