It is great for taking temperatures in all kinds of situations. i.e. room temperature, verifying the oven temperature, verifying frying oil temperature, even verifying body temperature. I didn't give it a 5 though, because it seems to switch from Fahrenheit to Celcius from time to time. I can't figure out why that is. It is also extremely annoying when you have to switch it back, since you have to use a needle to fit into the slot and switch it back. I do not know why they make this so hard. They should just have an exterior button that you could toggle to your hearts content. All in all, it has a very sturdy design and has worked great for me thus far. This contact infrared thermometer instantly provides the surface temperature of anything you point it at; your fingers/wrists/nose/ears, your laptop, the car dashboard, a soda can ... basically anything your idle curiosity can think of. I love using it to prove that my fingers are indeed colder than everyone else. In Las Vegas when I idly wondered how hot it was, this gadget revealed it was 110 degrees in the shade and 120 in the sun. It has some practical applications as well. During a seminar, the speaker borrowed my thermometer to prove the excess heat to the hotel maintenence staff. It's also a fun novelty at parties or conversation-starter, because people are fascinated by it. He was impressed by the quality and capability of this nifty little device and asked me to get one for him. He monitors the air temperature at the outlet vents before and after he works on a customers unit. After a few weeks I checked with him and he told me it works just great.
