Summary: Terrible p.o.c.
Comment: I recently used this unit to help navigate Los Angeles freeways-what a mistake!!! This thing almost got me into numerous wrecks!!! Over and over it had me on the wrong freeways, only to re-calculate and take a traffic-ridden time-consuming detour to get back to the correct route. Repeatedly it didn't tell me what turn I was supposed to take until it was too late. Numerous times it had me get off a freeway and take side streets when I should've just stayed on. Total piece of c%#p!
As I was angrily waiting to get back on a freeway going in the opposite direction because it got confused, I almost took it off the mount (which, by the way, doesn't stay on the windshield-it fell of repeatedly-I finally had to stick the unit on my lap) and threw it against a wall. That was the first time I'd experienced GPS rage...

Luckily, I maintained my cool and I was able to return it and purchase a Garmin Nuvi 760. NO COMPARISON!!! Even the windshield mount has a locking feature that prevents it from falling off. The menus are way more intuitive, and bottom line, it tells you when the next turn is coming up way in advance. Do yourself a favor and stay away from dumdum !!!

Summary: TomTom GO 730 - Very good, but not perfect
Comment: This is not my first experience with TomTom. I bought a GO 300 a few years ago because my wife's sense of direction is unfortunately lacking. I also use it occasionally on my commute to work to help find an alternate route when some tailgating fool causes a multi-car wreck on the Interstate or the Beltway. The TomTom has done quite well in that regard.
The 300 is quite a nice little device despite some small problems (which I believe are common to all auto GPS devices: maps are not always up-to-date, some Points of Interest are missing, difficulty seeing the GPS satellites in the midst of downtown buildings). But after a few years I felt I needed to have one for myself for my commuting and other driving. I decided on the 730 which was on sale in December (and as luck would have it, a week after I bought it here its price was knocked down another [...]). Some of my comments on the 730 will be compared to the 300.
First, the 730 has a large touch screen - nearly 4.5" diagonally. The whole device is 4.5" wide by 3 1/8" high by just under 1" thick. There is only one button: on-off. Color: black with some silver metal trim. Much more convenient to carry than the GO 300. The image presented is clear and sharp. Might be a bit washed out if hit by direct sunlight. Has map colors for daytime and nighttime driving. You can create your own or download color schemes through the TomTom HOME software that is used to connect your GPS to your computer and obtain firmware/map/voices/etc. updates.
Menus are very clear. Navigation is done by touching the screen or typing the address you wish to go to. There are several million POIs (points of interest: banks, gas stations, museums, restaurants, shops, et al) for the US and Canada available (as well as for Europe if you wish). If you find that a POI is wrong (wrong location, out of business) or if you wish to correct a POI or map item (one-way street, blcoked street, etc.) the 730 (as well as the x00 and x20 series) lets you correct the map error and upload it to TomTom where it will be reviewed and added to the next map edition or two. A very nice feature.
Battery life is disappointing. My 300 gave me 4 hours of operation on the battery. The 730 appears to only last about an hour. This may be because of a different processor or the larger screen. You definitely want to use the supplied car charger with the 730. (It also comes with a USB cradle that lets you charge it while on your PC.)
Voices are numerous and in a huge number of languages: Catalan, Finnish, Swedish, Chinese, Castillian Spanish, Latin American Spanish, UK/Australian/New Zealand/US/Irish English and on and on. The recorded voices are quite good. One note: the 730 has a text-to-speech feature that tells you where to turn and onto what street: "Turn right on Forrest Avenue." To use that feature you MUST use a computer-synthesized voice rather than a recorded voice. A recorded voice will just tell you to turn right or turn left without the street name. I think the computer voice sounds rather distorted or scratchy.
There are a couple of good web forums where you can get information about new releases of firmware, bugs, as well as get advice regarding windshield or dashboard mounts (tomtomforums.com, yournav.com are two I use). I have seen claims that the provided windshield mount does not stick all that well. I haven't tried it. It is different than the 300 mount which had a lever to create a suction in the suction cup. I bought a bean bag dashboard mount and a different mount to connect the 730 to the bean bag.
I have not seen it use IQ routes yet - although it has provided me directions that differ from those the 300 has given me and which I believe are a bit faster to drive.
All in all I like it. I did not give it 5 stars because I'm disappointed with the battery life and I think the mounting device on the rear of the TomTom could be a little more solid.
By the way, if you buy one then buy a case to go with it. The 300 had a soft mesh case. The 730 doesn't have one. I bought the CaseLogic GPSP-2 case which the 730 easily fits into (but not the auto charger).
I'd go into the Bluetooth and other features but they're adequately explained above. Oh, one thing. When I plugged the USB cable into a USB hub the TomTom wouldn't connect to my computer. Apparently it prefers to connect directly to a USB port on the computer itself (either that or it just didn't prefer my particular hub).

Comment: This is our second GPS system. The first was a Caliber and it did a great job of getting us where we wanted to go but there were too few updates and no bluetooth.

We have used it for about 1 week now and so far has done a superior job with street names, guidance and finding the best route.

The screen could be a bit brighter but you should be listening to it rather than watching the screen when driving anyway.

We had no trouble setting up the bluetooth even though our Nokia phones were not on the list. They worked the first time we tried them and the volume was great and no-one had a problem understanding us.

We did subscribe to the traffic and the only problem we had setting it up was that we are with ATT but we had to configure it to Cingular MediaWeb. No biggie and just took a few minutes to figure out since Cingular is now ATT. I do wish they had the red light cameras options for this country but hopefully they will soon.

What is a really great feature is that it shows your speed and I made it honk when my husband went over a certain speed. Keeps his lead foot from getting too heavy.

As far as a car mount goes, those suction things never work. What I did is attach two strips of velcro on the back of the TomTom and two strips on the front of the dash so when it is attached it looks like a tv screen at you. All I do is attach the TomTom to the strips and it holds great. I had also done the same thing with the other GPS we had. So for under $1, it turned out to be a great solution. Can't see spending big $$ on a custom mount.

Over all, this unit is working great, does what we want and I feel worth the money.

Comment: TomTom continues to show weak support for the US market with its software that touts fantastic features that are not available in this country, which is a constant reminder of the wasted potential of this device. The interface is mostly usable, with big buttons to click on using the touch screen. The TomTom Home software is miserable, coming up with weird errors and an inability to perform anything but the most basic tasks. Additionally, the battery is weak and loses its ability to hold its charge quickly. Finally, the extra features - MP3 playback, bluetooth phone connections, etc., barely work even when you get them configured correctly. Not worth the price.
